As I was nestling in to read a book, my mind kept going back to my Mt. Hermon experience, just a few weeks ago.
The California sun, roommates, and fellow writers are still fresh in my mind. Somehow, the excitement of meeting with fellow Christian writers, who mentored one another, has sparked a huge interest in writing for me.
You see, I wasn't intentionally persuing writing up until last August, when God gave me an idea for a book. At first I thought it was "my" idea. But the more I followed up on it, the more it unfolded as a "God" idea. The thought started with, "I think I'll write a devotional book for Kim."
Kim Walling is a great friend of mine, who has a singing/songwriting career in Tennessee. I thought it would be a great idea to write a personal devotional for her. I continued to pray about the idea, and came up with some scriptures I wanted to use. Then, I asked Kim what translation/version of the Bible she used, and she told me New Living Translation. As I looked up each scripture in the NLT, there was a strong slant on farming.
I started praying more, and writing down some possibilities for a farming theme, as a devotional. Well, needless to say, the ideas kept coming, and before I knew it, I was writing devotions with a farming slant. My mind was captivated with this idea, and as I kept on writing, I thought about how I would publish it.
Self publishing is a new concept for me, and I was considering that from the start. But then I remembered coming to Mt. Hermon a few years back. I really started praying about whether I should go back to Mt. Hermon, and if God had something better than self publishing. Well, as you read in the beginning, I did go to Mt. Hermon with the idea, but God re-affirmed my persute of a publishing company. He opened a door with AMG Publishers, to send in a book proposal for a Bible study/devotional (with the farming slant I started with). God is so awesome!
What I came away with from Mt. Hermon, was more than just "how to write," but the deep belief that "I need to write." I am currently finding myself at my computer with a great desire to blog. And now that the invitations are coming in to do so, God is opening a whole new world for me.
I encourage you, whether you are a seasoned blogger, or a freshman like me, to influence others with your writing. You never know, it just might be a "God idea."
